Blackbeard's Ghost

The evil pirate Blackbeard, whose name was really Edward Teach, was a tall man with a very long bread that covered most of his face and hung down to his waist. He tied his beard in pigtails and covered them in black ribbons. Sometimes, he would set fire to his rum, and drink it, flame and all. Lots of people thought he was the Devil incarnate. For twenty-seven months, Blackbeard terrorized the sailors of the Atlantic and Caribbean, ambushing ships, stealing their cargo, and killing the people who were against him. when prisoners surrendered willingly, he spared them. If they did not surrender, or if they put up a fight he killed them. In November of 1718, Blackbeard wen t to his favorite place, his hideout. This hideout was called Teach's Hole, and it was off of Ocracoke Island. There he had a pirate party that lasted for days, and a few North Carolina citizens told Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia. Governor Spotswood instantly told Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navyto go to Ocracoke and capture the pirates. On November 21, 1718, Maynard and Blackbeard were engaged in a horrible bloody battle. Maynard and Blackbeard came face to face, both shooting at each other. Blackbeard's shot missed Maynard, but Maynard's hit the pirate. One of Maynard's men came up behind Blackbeard and slit his throat. Blackbeard was so madthat his shot missed Maynard and his men rushed the pirate, and it took five gunshots and about twenty cuts before Blackbeard fell down dead. Maynard thought that the only way to make sure that Blackbeard was dead was to cut off his head. They hing the pirate's head from the bowsprit and threw the body overboard. When the body hit the water the the head hanging from the bowsprit shouted "Come on Edward!" and the headless body swam around the ship three times before sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Still to this day, Blackbeard's ghost has haunted Teach's Hole, always and forever searching for his missing head. Sometimes, the headless ghost floats on the surface of the water, or swims around and around Teach's Hole, glowing underneath the water. Some people have said that they saw a strange light coming from the shore on the Pamlico Sound side of Ocracoke Island and know that it is "Teach's Light". On windy night you can still hear Blackbeard's ghost tramping up and down and shouting, "Where's my head?!"
